The book is written to inspire women of all ages, and invite them to realize that real happiness begins from the inside out. Although written specifically with the black woman in mind, many of the concepts in the book would benefit any woman.

 Book Review

In the revolutionary book about a culture of women Tinisha Johnson author of the self-help women’s book, “Lessons Learned, LovingYourself as a Black Woman” gives women a reason to move forward with their lives. Her book inspires black women in Ten Life Lessons and some topics give you a place on the page for writing down thoughts, evaluations of yourself.  Topics involve some from the simple, what is the true definition of happiness to the more complex self examination of 10 characteristic traits about oneself. Her book though written towards a culture of black woman is suitable for any race of women with topics that fit across individuals, Loving Yourself, changing your life means taking the first step in a new direction and many other motivational, inspirational lessons for women everywhere. The things I like about this book was that it was easy advice to follow, the author doesn’t talk down to women, but rather she wrote from experience and her lessons come across as inspiration that she wants to share with others.  As she does state in the forward of the book she experienced a lot of the pain and sorrow that comes with being a single mother alone, scared, working hard at her 9 to 5 job while trying to get her writing career off the ground. She was in and out of relationships, lost and confused as to what to do with her life. Life Lessons is a book written from experience and taking from that experience the author took a careful look at where her life was going next. Lessons Learned Loving Yourself as a Black Woman is a book written from the heart.

Hi Tinisha Nicole Johnson

Welcome to Paperback Writer.

Q: Would you share with us how you came up with the idea for your book?

A: I wrote Lessons Learned in 2003, but some of the entries were from my journal, which I originally started writing around 1998. Lessons Learned is a self-help book for woman, mainly women of color – black women. The book started out as a journal, not to be shared with anyone, just to get my feelings out on paper. I was going through a crazy and suicidal period in my life, so I decided to express myself with pen and pad. As time passed, I spent time editing, revising, and adding to my journal. Next thing I knew, the journal turned into a book that I wanted to share with others and eventually get it published.

Q: Was it a light bulb moment or something that you thought about for a very long time?

A: The concept of the book is something I thought about for a very long time. I spend years revising this book and adding to it.

Q: How did you come up with the title?

A: The short version of the title is: Lessons Learned. The complete title is Lessons Learned: Loving Yourself as a Black Woman. I came up with the “Lessons Learned” part because there are so many lessons that a person learns in life that can literally change their life. I’ve personally learned lots of lessons in my own life, and while talking to other women while working on this book, I’ve learned that learning one’s lessons plays a big part in a woman’s life. The remaining title of the book “Loving Yourself as a Black Woman” has to deal with general stereotypes of women of color and embracing one’s uniqueness.

Q: How did you find an agent and publisher?

A: I’m still searching for an agent, but I found my publisher, because I have the same publisher who published my first book. With my first book, I spent a year sending out query letters, and searching for a publisher. Persistence finally paid off.

Q: How long did it take you to complete the first draft?

I finished writing my book in about four months. That was in 2003. Since then, I’ve been revising, editing, and adding to it. I did get a final edit of it in 2009.

Q: What’s your favorite time of day to write?

A: Definitely mornings, however, I’ll write anytime I have the time. However, in the mornings, I feel refreshed and my mind is clearer.

Q: Do you have a writing routine? Daily goals (# of pages, word count) or a specific ritual you do to jumpstart the writing muse.

A: My daily routine Monday-Fridays consist of waking up, taking my kids to school, working out, reading, and then coming home and diving into my writing. If I’m working on a certain book, or writing assignment, I do have daily goals which include at least a couple of pages a day.

Q: With all that you have encountered on the road to publication what advice would you give to new authors.

A: Persistence, Persistence and more Persistence. Persistence has been a key to my writing accomplishments. You also have to believe in yourself and have a passion for writing. My last advice would be to read – read other author’s books. There are more authors and books being published than there used to be, so there’s more competition and variety, so persistence and a belief in your writing really comes into play now more than ever.

Thank you, Tinisha Nicole Johnson for stopping by Paperback Writer. I wish you continued success with your tour.
