Immortalis: Hunters & Prey Book Review

Immortalis: Hunters & Prey Virtual Book Tour

If vampires were ever thought of as the undead and emotionless, then this book has one clan of vampires that defy traditional stereotypes. The reader will find every emotion under cover of darkness within these pages; fear, anger, suspense, tantrums, moodiness, horror and those all pleasurable sexual emotions. Author Katie Salidas has made Hunters & Prey a page turner from the first to the last page and she has left the reader in anticipation for the third book in the Immortalis series.

Hunters & Prey is the second book in the Immortalis series and continues the story of Alyssa being turned into a vampire. Welcomed back are the set of main characters from Immortalis; Carpe Noctem, Lydander, Nicolas and his mate Rosalyn, and a few other secondary characters that give just as much flavor to the novel as the others. Lysander and Nicolas are the mature males that have endured thousands of years of survival against the evil that hunts them. Rosalyn is the sweet loving female character that continues to mother Alyssa and provide some much needed common sense in those moments of heated arguments.

The characters in Hunters & Prey must fight for survival for both human and vampire. Fighting against an evil greater than the mob which Las Vegas is known for and much more wicked than their own kind, the clan must band together against this evil to ensure their survival. Alyssa must defy her clan in order to save her life once again. Her defiance of vampire law doesn’t sit well with the clan and must be dealt with accordingly.

About the Book

Becoming a vampire saved Alyssa from death, but the price was high: the loss of everything and everyone attached to her mortal life. She’s still learning to cope when a surprise confrontation with Santino Vitale, the Acta Sanctorum’s most fearsome hunter, sends her fleeing back to the world she once knew, and Fallon, the friend she’s missed more than anything.
Alyssa breaks vampire law by revealing her new, true self to her old friend, a fact which causes strong division in the group that should support her most: her clan.
Worse yet, her revelation entangles Fallon in the struggle between vampires and hunters and The Acta Sanctorum is ready to attack again, with a new army of hybrid creations: the Frenzy Soldiers.
If Alyssa hopes to survive and keep her mortal friend safe, she’ll have to be willing to make a deal with the enemy, and regain her clan’s support. It will take everyone working together in a precarious truce to fight against the Acta Sanctorum’s new threat.

About the Author

Author of the hot new Urban Fantasy series, Immortalis, Katie has always had a desire to entertain. Since, early childhood, she’s dreamed up fantastical characters and scribbled them into pages of various journals and notebooks. Taking an interest in vampires at an early age, she devoured every book, featuring those mysterious, blood sucking creatures, in any genre she could find. She claims that, of all the monsters out there, vampires had always been the most interesting.

It was only natural that a love of reading about vampires, and a love of writing, turned into a desire to write her own stories. A Las Vegas native, having grown up in the famed City of Sin, Katie loves to feature it as a recurring setting for many of her stories.

Salidas creates the characters and the story line that provide for an intriguing and exciting novel. Not sense the television shows of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” (1997-2003) have I so enjoyed reading about vampires. I look forward to reading the next in the series.

Vampires, vampires and more vampires, an entire brothel of them in Las Vegas just waiting for unsuspecting female company to, as they say, “Sink their teeth into.”  Author Katie Salidas is visiting today with her erotic short story of The House of Immortal Pleasures.

You can find Katie Salidas at www.risingsignbooks.com and follow her tour page at Pump Up Your Book.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

HOUSE OF IMMORTAL PLEASURES

Blindfolded and kidnapped, Daphne is whisked away to the famed, House of Immortal Pleasures, a Vampire-run Brothel in Pahrump, Nevada.

Sometimes the only way to mend a broken heart is to get back in the saddle. At least that is how Daphne’s friends see it. And since Daphne isn’t showing any signs of letting that happen, they take it into their own hands. With a few shots of liquid courage, a pat on the ass, and a donated gold card, Daphne is unwillingly sent into fantasy room 123 to meet her creature of the night, Connor.

It’s Connor’s job to seduce and entice Daphne to try all the expensive, sexual services on the menu. And he is prepared to do just that, until he peers into her mind and sees the damage done by her broken heart. After learning of her past pain, Connor’s plans change. No more is this a game of seduction to pad the pockets of the brothel owner. Connor decides to lavish Daphne with real attention and affection. Something she desperately needs. He will heal her heart the only way he can, by showing her she is beautiful, desirable, and sexy.

INTERVIEW:

PBW: Tell us a little about your book.

KS: Blindfolded and kidnapped, Daphne is whisked away to the famed, House of Immortal Pleasures, a Vampire-run Brothel in Pahrump, Nevada.

PBW: How do you usually get started on a writing a novel?

KS: First, I don’t think about it as a novel. It sounds silly but it’s true. It’s just a “story” and I let the muse take me where it wants. Sometimes it becomes novel length and sometimes it is less. It’s okay no matter how long or short it is. The main thing is to write with no limitations. Forcing myself to a word count never works. First drafts are always just “free writing.” From there, I tweak and add or cut where necessary.

PBW: What are the challenges in writing about vampires?

KS: The challenge is in defining the vampire. There are so many different types out there that you can’t just give a “canned” character. What are their strength, weaknesses, limitations, needs? Once you have them defined it makes it easy to fit them into the story. In House of Immortal Pleasures, my vampires are out in the open, they don’t need to kill, and they can mesmerize the pants off of women. LoL. In all actuality, they are more fun to write than a challenge.

PBW: Why do you think vampires are so appealing to audiences?

KS: I think it is the fact that they can be portrayed in so many ways. In Romance and Erotica, they are dark, sexy, mysterious, and let’s not forget HOT! In Urban Fantasy they are strong and Alpha Male characters who often take on a protective role and save the damsel in distress. In Horror they are the ultimate killer, top of the food chain. Take your pick, there is a different flavor of vampire for every genre.

PBW: When did you become interested in vampires?

KS: I’ve been hooked since I was little. I read my first Novel at 10 years old. Now it’s a popular TV show, but back then it was just The Vampire Diaries books and I so wanted to be with Stefan. Ha ha!

PBW: What is your second favorite genre to write about?

KS: I really love Erotica and Romance, they are just fun to write. Other than that, Urban Fantasy is a favorite too. My novel series Immortals is Urban Fantasy and I really have fun working on those books.

PBW: Do you have a standard writing routine?

KS: I wish I could say yes. I am so disorganized. I write when I can and often times that means I am up, clicking away at my computer, until 2am.

PBW: I know you recently did a book signing for your first book, Immortalis Carpe Noctem. Will you share with us what it was like?

KS: That was so much fun. I can’t wait for the opportunity to do it again. I was able to chat with lots of new people, meet some fans, and introduce myself to new readers. Barnes & Noble and their staff were so wonderful! They set me up right next to the front door and I swear they announced me 100 times over the speaker system.  I was on cloud nine for the entire day.

Excerpt

The doormen left Daphne and her friends sitting in a quiet, cozy little booth in the downstairs bar. Soft music, the clink of glasses, and a mix of chatter from the other patrons filled the room. They sat perusing the house menu. Services here were ordered à la carte, and Daphne used the excuse of needing time to choose her … services to avoid being sent upstairs. She hid behind the tall, laminated menu, hiding her face from view. All around the dimly-lit bar were vampires, both men and women, working the customers, trying to get them to go up to the rooms and enjoy their erotic pleasures.

Surrounded by her friends and not being groped or mesmerized by Fabio-esque men, Daphne felt a little more like herself. No longer dizzy, she finally found the ability to articulate the thoughts floating around in her head. She set the menu down and glared at Jamie. “I want to go home, now!”

“Not until you have had some fun,” Jamie teased, swiping the menu from under Daphne’s hand. “Now, you said you wanted to look at the menu. So, what sounds good? Maybe a little tongue lashing?”

“What! No, give me that.” Daphne yanked the menu out of Jamie’s hand.

She gasped and bit her lip as she looked over the list of services to order. There it was, halfway down the laminated page. “What the hell, it’s actually called ‘Tongue Lashing.’” She read the description.

Indulge in your most sensual fantasy as your master of pleasure, using only their tongue, will explore your most sensitive places.

Daphne gulped down a breath, trying not to show her interest, wanting to look disgusted and repulsed. She crossed her legs and set the menu down on the table. She hoped her ruse worked. Daphne knew she couldn’t bring herself to be with another man, but her body had a different idea. Just the thought of a warm, velvety tongue lapping at her skin started warmth pulsing between her legs.

“Oh c’mon, Daph. Don’t be such a prude,” Kerri said. She took the menu from the table.

A scantily clad cocktail waitress wandered by to take their orders. “Tequila,” Jamie exclaimed. “Three shots for each of us.”

“Woot,” Kerri said in agreement as she bounced up and down in her seat. Her tight, curly red hair bounced with her as she danced in the booth. “Let’s get this party started right.”

Daphne sighed and put her head down on the table.

“Oh look, they have a virgin special.” Kerri said excitedly and thumped Daphne on the shoulder. “Fun for first-timers.” She pointed to a spot on the menu. “Don’t be nervous. We will make sure your first time is magical.” She read the description with an added flair to her voice. “Start with a candle-lit bath to help you set the mood. Then retreat to one of our fantasy rooms where your creature of the night will—”

“Stop it! Just shut up.” Daphne looked up, shooting Kerri a dangerous, menacing glare.

“Well you haven’t had sex since Ken. I’m sure you qualify for the first-timers special. Your cherry has probably grown back by now.”

Jamie and Kerri high-fived. “Use it or lose it,” they cheered together.

“That’s it. I’m going home. I’ve had enough,” Daphne said, standing up next to the table. “I’ll call a cab if you won’t take me home.”

The cocktail waitress returned with nine shot glasses, a shaker of salt, and a plate of lemon and lime wedges.

“Okay, Daphne, we’ll go …” Jamie said solemnly. Daphne breathed a sigh of relief. Jamie turned to Kerri and winked. A wicked smile crossed her face “Only after you drink your shots.”

Daphne groaned. “Enough of your stupid games.”

“Look, lady.” Jamie’s tone became serious. “It’s a seventy-dollar minimum just to walk through the door here. Let’s at least have some drinks, okay?”

Daphne collapsed back into the booth. “Fine. Hand me a fucking shot.”

“That’s the spirit,” Kerri said, sliding a glass to Daphne while picking up one for herself. “To popping Daphne’s cherry.” She held up her glass. “Again!”

Daphne groaned loudly. With friends like these, who needs enemies? She tipped the glass and swallowed the harsh liquid.

Hiya! I’m Katie Salidas, author of the new book Immortalis Carpe Noctem. Since I am a lover of all things vamp, I was asked to put together a little list as to why vamps have such appeal, namely sex appeal.

Here are 13 of my favorite reasons why…

About the Book:

Walking back home through the badly-lit campus of UNLV, twenty-five year old Alyssa is brutally attacked by two savage men. By the time a handsome stranger intervenes, Alyssa has almost bled to death, and doesn’t even struggle as her new protector sinks his sharp teeth into her neck.

Alyssa wakes to a harsh new reality, and to a raging thirst she’s never felt before. Lysander, the sexy yet aloof man who turned her, must now teach her the way of the immortals – and with such a desirable teacher Alyssa starts to realize that her fate is not as dark as she first feared.

But, just as sparks begin to fly between the pair, Lysander is alerted that his enemies are on the move and determined to destroy them both.

Led by the cunning and ruthless, Santino Vitale, the fanatical Acta Santorum have vowed to hunt down and destroy every last immortal in God’s name, and they have the vampires of Las Vegas in their sights.
Meanwhile, after seeing that Lysander has taken a new mate, the beautiful and pitiless Kallisto, is out for revenge. Alyssa soon finds out that hell hath no fury like a vampire scorned.
