Princess April Morning Glory Book Tour and Kindle Fire Giveaways

Princess April Morning Glory

About Princess April Morning-Glory:

At long last, Princess April Morning-Glory emerges as a lost treasure from the golden age of Hollywood.

Written and illustrated in 1941 by Letitia Fairbanks, the niece of silent film stars Douglas Fairbanks Sr. and Mary Pickford, the seemingly traditional children’s book is transformed into a modern-day fairy tale that will captivate child and adult readers alike.

Letitia was inspired to create portraiture for the characters of Princess April Morning-Glory from film stars of the day. John Barrymore, and Letitia’s cousin Douglas Fairbanks Jr., provided glamorous inspiration through their then-current films. The Wicked King’s (Barrymore) costume was sparked by his role as Louis XV in Irving Thalberg’s 1938 Marie Antoinette, while the hairstyle resembles his eponymous role in Archie Mayo’s 1931 Svengali. Prince Chivalry was inspired by her cousin’s (Fairbanks) sword-fighting role in David O. Selznick’s 1937 The Prisoner of Zenda.

Viewed as unconventional when it first debuted – up until then, no one had thought to meld a Disney-like moral tale with a swashbuckling adventure – the story centers on the prescient acknowledgment that we create our destinies by the choices that we make.

The main narrative is focused around the brave and courageous Princess April who must first transcend darkness and evil before she can realize her true potential. Intrigued by the Great World and its sense of adventure, a young Princess April decides to abandon the familiarity of her home in Fairyland and undertake a voyage into the unknown. Once outside the Enchanted Forest, she finds comfort and friendship in the company of various creatures who ensure her safe passage.

But returning home proves more difficult than at first she realized. In order to go back to Fairyland, a friendly wizard informs Princess April that she must first accomplish three good deeds. Can Princess April resist the temptation of darker forces and summon enough courage to continue doing good deeds? And if she dares to hold true to herself, will it someday lead her back home again?

ImageAbout Letitia Fairbanks:

Letitia Fairbanks, the niece of Douglas Fairbanks Sr. and Mary Pickford, lived a life guided by artistic passions. In 1939, wanting to commemorate her late uncle, Letitia began work on Princess April Morning-Glory, allowing a creative outlet for combining her lifelong loves: painting, writing, and illustration.

Holding firm to her artistic identify, Letitia gravitated toward portraiture, landscapes, and still-lifes. She was also a biographer, co-authoring Douglas Fairbanks: The Fourth Musketeer, with Ralph Hancock. Her marriage to Hal Smoot in 1966 marked the beginning of a particularly joyful and creative period. Needle points and annual Christmas cards, which featured a painting from the previous year, not to mention her role as a wife, mother, step-mother and grandmother brought her much fulfillment. After a life rich in artistic accomplishment, Letitia passed away in September of 1992.

The Abraham Man Book Tour

Image

About the book:

The mere mention of the insanity defense guarantees a lively debate. Opponents of the defense cite the loss of criminal culpability while proponents argue just as passionately that the insanity defense is the ultimate act of compassion. The protagonists would probably be quite surprised to learn that the same basic concerns consumed Americans in the nineteenth century. One factor – The Abraham Man – sowed the seeds of confusion and controversy that united the past with the present.

Some of the most celebrated civil and criminal trials in American history were argued under the shadow of the Abraham Man. The detailed stories of long forgotten legal cases bring the antics of the Abraham Man to life. Through the process, readers will follow the careers of notable Civil War era surgeons whose post-war professional development shaped the future of modern mental health care.

Excerpt:

Some of the most celebrated civil and criminal trials in American history were argued under the shadow of the Abraham Man. Readers will delight in the detailed stories of long forgotten legal cases which bring the antics of the Abraham Man to life. Through the process, readers will follow the careers of notable Civil War surgeons whose post-war professional development shaped the future of modern mental health care. In addition, the reader will learn about the promise of the asylum movement, prominent practitioners of the era, the politics, and eventual decline of institutional mental health care.

Both readers and libraries will find The Abraham Man a refreshing, authoritative text replete with primary source documentation. The engaging narrative deftly weaves the history of science in the 19th century with evolving trends in legal practice. Throughout this period, the budding relationship between doctors and lawyers fashioned the foundation of modern medical legal practice. At every step along the path the Abraham Man sowed confusion and controversy, paradoxically contributing to more rigorous medical practice.

The book will clearly tap into the public’s modern fascination with forensic medicine. Professional readers, such as lawyers, doctors, and psychologists, will find The Abraham Man a valuable historical reference which still rings true after 150 years. Civil War aficionados will discover a fresh perspective and “the rest of the story” about some famous soldiers. Medical history buffs will be enlightened by the devices and stratagems doctors employed to uncover malingering, in many cases the forerunners of modern diagnostic technologies.

Gary’s Gray World – Guest Post Inspiration – Children’s Author Ryan J. Cunningham

Image

My inspiration for writing “Gary’s Gray World” came from watching my nephew, Dan grow up without his biological father being there for him. Dan is now thirteen years old, but he has no contact with his real dad. When Dan was born his father wasn’t in the picture very much. My sister raised him by herself except with the help of our parents and myself.

Dan’s father always worked a lot of hours at his job and would work overtime as much as he could to support his family this way. However, because he was spending so much time at work he wasn’t giving his son the love and attention Dan needed from him. I could see and hear the disappointment in him whenever he asked where his father was. It was sad to hear him asking us why his dad wasn’t able to play with him or just spend some more time with him. He was sad and hurt so he would spend a lot of time alone in his bedroom playing by himself.

As his uncle I tried to be there for him as much as I could. I would take him to the park, the movies, and play games with him a few hours during the week. We would have so much fun together. Not only was he smiling more and enjoying the time we shared, but he was becoming more sociable too.

As parents having a good job and working hard to support one’s family is very important. However when a parent cares more about the job and spends all of their time working instead of taking the time out for the children, the children become sad and lonely. A child needs both of their parents’ love and affection as well as their time and attention so they can learn and grow in a loving relationship.

ImageAbout Gary’s Gray World

When Gary’s father is too busy to play, a scary moment at the baseball field brings his dad rushing to the park to rescue him. But instead the two discover that making time for each other is the most important thing in a father and son relationship.

Excerpt:

“What are your plans for today, Son?” asked Dad, putting on his coat and hat.

“Today’s the annual father and son baseball game.” Gary brightened. “Don’t you remember?”

His father abruptly stopped in his tracks and turned to look at Gary with an apologetic expression on his face.

“I’m sorry, I can’t be there. I’ve got too much work to do at the office. I’ll make it up to you, I promise.”

“Sure. That’ll be fine,” said Gary, trying not to sound too disappointed.

Mr. Breeze

Mr. Breeze

About the Book:

MR. BREEZE (the title is inspired by a song by the rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd) follows the increasingly amazing experiences of freelance photojournalist Michael Ryan as he hears of stories about a man named Zack, who can seemingly perform inhuman feats that could be called miraculous. Ryan eventually meets Zack and becomes, at Zack’s insistence, Zack’s messenger. Along the way, a dog named Rover, who also possesses otherworldly powers, joins Zack and Ryan in their adventures, which include a remarkable visit to the Centers for Disease Control, in Atlanta, in search of a cure for AIDS.

The secret of who Zack is and why he has chosen Ryan to tell his story to the world forms the surprising and moving climax to the book.

And there is a MR. BREEZE sequel in the works, Richfield notes. The working title is REVELATION:  THE RETURN OF MR. BREEZE. “The second book is about how we take that message (from the first book) and what we do with it.”

A Christmas Kindness Book Blast

Eight-year-old Robert is eager to share his wish list with Santa at the mall on Christmas Eve. When he meets Glenn, who has only one request for Santa, Robert is confused over what he should do. Can he cast aside what he wants and ask Santa to bring his new friend a special gift?

Inspiration Behind A Christmas Kindness

How is it that children have the ability to reach out and help others in ways adults don’t always think to do?

One year, our oldest daughter–then only eight–went door-to-door in our neighborhood collecting money for Toys for Tots. Coordinated by the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve, this program collects new, unwrapped toys each year and distributes them as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in our communities. This summer, my girls ran a lemonade stand so they could bring money to a local animal shelter.

Why don’t I think of doing such things? I guess it’s easier to write a check and send it in the mail. But what effort is involved in that? My children make it personal, and much more meaningful, by giving something of themselves.

With A Christmas Kindness, I hope to capture the generosity of a child’s heart–the way they look at the world as a place of endless opportunities to make a difference.

May you be blessed this holiday season.

Bombshell – Author Interview – Mike Faricy

Bombshell Virtual Book Tour

Bombshell Virtual Book Tour

Mike Faricy is the award winning author of mystery suspense thrillers woven together with a rich strain of humor and even some romance. He and his wife live in Saint Paul, Minnesota and Dublin, Ireland.

His entertaining tales are populated with the sort of quirky, oddball characters we’d all like to know more about, but wisely prefer to keep at a distance. They serve not so much as examples as they do warnings to the rest of us. None of his characters will be saving the world from terrorism, international banking conspiracies or coups to topple the government. Rather, they’re individuals inhabiting a world just below the surface of polite society. The difficulties they find themselves in are usually due to their own bad decisions, but then, bad decisions make for interesting tales.

All of his books are stand alone, read them in any order you wish. Russian Roulette introduces the bizarrely devilish Devlin Haskell as a PI with a foot on both sides of the law. Dev’s adventures continue in Mr. Softee and the soon to be released Bite Me. Mike is currently working on his latest top secret project. He graduated High School from St. Thomas Academy and earned a BA in history from St. Norbert College.

His latest book is the crime fiction, Bombshell.

About Bombshell

Dysfunctional, bumbling, crazy babe-magnet Dev Haskell, P.I., becomes the envy of every guy with a heartbeat when he’s hired to watch over a team of gorgeous English roller derby stars. Though he’d rather be standing guard in the shower room, he suddenly finds himself under arrest and found guilty before he’s even charged. He’s got an attorney who drinks too much, a beautiful woman with a bad attitude, a feisty team of females ready to kill him – and no answers. Bombshell is another fast paced, engrossing suspense thriller from Minnesota’s master of the bizarre, Mike Faricy.

Bombshell-banner

Why was writing Bombshell so important to you?

Hi, Thanks for having me, it’s great to be here. Bombshell was a story I’ve wanted to write for a while. The story takes place in the world of women’s roller derby. A while ago I was talking with some women who are involved with our local roller derby team. The more I learned the more I wanted to know. I was really intrigued by their names, the outfits they wear, their fanatic fan base. One of the many things I learned is that the teams do quite a bit of fund raising for local charity. Anyway, a women’s roller derby team seemed like the perfect venue for my Dev Haskell character. Dev is a wise cracking, back slapping Private Investigator who loves the ladies and seems to be off just a half beat when it comes to certain common sense aspects of life. I began writing and immediately the thing just started to come together and more or less wrote itself.

How did you come up with the title?

To tell you the truth I didn’t. The local roller derby team in the book is called the Bombshells. A friend of mine was doing a beta read, I think I had the manuscript labeled ‘working title’ or something equally clever. She phoned me and said you idiot, the title has to be Bombshell, it seems so obvious. Actually once she said it all of a sudden it was pretty obvious, even to a slow guy like me. Another friend in Miami, Wendy Doscher-Smith is a photographer and I asked her if she had any ideas for a cover shot. As luck would have it she had a girlfriend who skated for Miami’s roller derby team so the cover shot for Bombshell is really a roller derby star, Pinky Gomez and she really skates with Miami’s Vice City Rollers. The description of a black hot pants uniform with black and pink striped stockings pulled up over pink fishnet hose in Bombshell is based on Pinky’s actual Vice City Rollers uniform.

Can you tell us more about your main character, Dev Haskell?

As I mentioned before, Dev has an eye for the ladies so consider that fair warning. At base Dev is really a pretty good hearted guy, he would certainly be a fun date, but you most likely wouldn’t tell your girlfriends and you probably wouldn’t want him to meet your folks. He has the best of intentions most of the time, but things seem to have a way of going in a slightly different direction whenever he is involved. He’s a back slapping, wise cracking guy who knows a lot of the wrong sort of folks. He has some good pals on our local police force as well as some officials who think the city of St. Paul would be a much better place were he somewhere else, like behind bars for instance. He runs in a sort of social pool that’s a foot or two below the surface of polite society. He’s been known to make more than one bad decision. He seems to have a knack for having just one more for the road when in fact he should just go home. He’s woken up in his share of strange bedrooms. Women find him interesting, attractive, dangerous, fun, even sexy, but at some point they all seem to be driven to a state of pure frustration, finally throw up their hands and dump him. There is a long list of women who have told him something along the lines of “don’t call me, ever again”. He can be tenacious as well as completely worthless. He’s the sort of person you’d want to keep tabs on just because it would be interesting to learn what he’s been up to, but you wouldn’t want to get too close. That said, if you had a problem, you could call him at three in the morning and he’d be there for you.

Are there any supporting characters we need to know about?

There are a few who reoccur in the Dev Haskell series. A vice squad detective, Aaron LaZelle is a childhood pal of Dev’s and he occasionally dispenses sage advice, which Dev almost always ignores. There’s another detective, Norris Manning, he’s wound a little too tight, over worked and under paid might be an apt description. It’s not that he has an in for Dev, but Manning does things by the book and he would love to see the rest of the world operate that way. Not only has Dev never opened the book, he can’t even find it. Heidi Bauer, she and Dev have a purely physical, on-again–off-again relationship. Dev calls her for bail money, but she’s just about had it with that routine. Sunny Einer is a computer geek who rolls her eyes and occasionally helps Dev although there is absolutely no romantic involvement between them. Not that Dev wouldn’t go for it, but Sunny has the bar set way above the likes of Dev. Louie Laufen is Dev’s attorney, tough to say which one is more screwed up, Dev or Louie.

Now that Bombshell has been published, what’s your next project?

My next project is another Dev Haskell novel, Tutti Frutti. I’m hoping to have that released right around the first of the year. I also wrote a novella for the Fight Card series. It’s a series of short stories all written under the pseudonym Jack Tunney. These are 50’s noir boxing tales, a little different than my usual genre but a lot of fun. My contribution is entitled Irish Dukes, it takes place in Dublin and will be released in early November. Each author is left a lot of leeway provided the protagonist comes from St. Vincent’s Asylum for Boys in Chicago where he learned life’s lessons through boxing from Father Tim. After the first of the year I’ve two more Dev Haskell tales I’m working on.

Do you have anything you’d like to tell our readers?

Yes, please take a moment and check out Bombshell (http://amzn.to/Uyc5eY) on Amazon. Enjoy the read and don’t forget to tell 2-300 of your closest friends. You can connect with me via my face book pages; Mike Faricy or Mike Faricy Books. Be sure to check out the Dev Haskell face book page, there’s always a lot of fun things happening there.

The Proxy Assassin – author interview – John Knoerle

John KnoerleJohn Knoerle began his creative endeavors in the early 70s as a member of the DeLuxe Radio Theatre, a comedy troupe in Santa Barbara. He then moved to LA and did stand-up comedy, opening for the likes of Jay Leno and Robin Williams.

Knoerle wrote the screenplay Quiet Fire, which starred Karen Black, and the stage play The He-Man Woman Hater’s Club, an LA Time’s Critic’s Choice. He also worked as a staff writer for Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion.

Knoerle moved to Chicago in 1996 with his wife Judie. His first novel, “Crystal Meth Cowboys,” was optioned by Fox TV. His second novel, “The Violin Player,” won the Mayhaven Award for Fiction.

John Knoerle’s novel, A Pure Double Cross, was the first volume of a late 40s spy trilogy featuring former OSS agent Hal Schroeder. The second volume, A Despicable Profession, was published in 2010. Knoerle’s latest book, The Proxy Assassin, Book Three of the American Spy Trilogy, has just been released.

Visit his website at www.johnknoerle.com.

Why do you write?

In that wonderful movie Moonstruck Olympia Dukakis has an ‘aha’ moment. She has been trying to understand why men like her husband commit adultery. She figures it’s about more than just sex. Then it comes to her: “Men cheat because they fear death!”

That’s why men write too, if you want my opinion. It’s a small shot at immortality.

In his memorial tribute to Yeats, W.H. Auden wrote,

Time that is intolerant
Of the brave and innocent,
And indifferent in a week
To a beautiful physique,

Worships language and forgives
Everyone by whom it lives;
Pardons cowardice, conceit,
Lays its honours at their feet.

The Proxy AssassinYour American Spy Trilogy is set in the late 40s. Do you have a particular fascination with that era?

I do. Two powerful cross currents were fighting each other in the U.S. during the immediate post-war period. A yearning to return to home and hearth and attempt to forget how the supposedly civilized part of the world had almost succeeded in committing suicide. A yearning that stood in direct conflict with the role that America now found thrust upon it – Defender of the Free World.

On a lighter note, let’s face it, it was a hell of a lot more fun to be a guy in the late 40s. You could have a steak for breakfast, two martinis at lunch, and about the only place you couldn’t smoke was church.

There’s an undercurrent of German pride in your Trilogy. What’s that about?

It’s German-American pride. My father’s family migrated from the Old Country in the 19th Century so they were fully assimilated Yanks by the 20th Century, yet still proud of their German heritage. Until World Wars I and II came along and made German ancestry vaguely shameful. Of course no German-Americans were interned, as happened to Japanese-Americans, but many German restaurants and beer halls shut down and even streets with German names were re-christened.

I still feel badly for my grandparents and great-grandparents. They couldn’t fully celebrate who they were through no fault of their own. So I thought I’d give the Kraut-American community a little overdue love.
